Bird Watching in Nepal
Nepal is a paradise for bird lovers with over 856 species (almost 10% of the world total of birds). And among them almost 500 hundred species are found in the Kathmandu Valley alone. The most popular bird watching spots in Kathmandu are Phulchoki, Godavari, Nagarjun, Bagmati river, Taudaha and so on. Get your binoculars and look forward to a rewarding experience. From outside the valley, the vast difference in elevations from approx 100m to over 5,500 m above sea level gives the visitor a huge array in species to be found at all different altitude levels. Royal Bardia National Park
Set in the Western Terai, this national park covers 968 square kms of sal forest and whispering grassland. The area is home to royal Bengal tigers, one horned rhinos as well as leopards, civets, sloth bears, and many species of deer as well as over 250 species of birds. Chitwan National Park
Nepal’s most famous National Park is large and covers a diverse array of terrain. The 932 square kms of sal forest and swampy flood plains neck-deep in elephant grass is home to the rare and beautiful one-horned rhino, as well as one of the world’s largest populations of Royal Bengal tigers. Leopards, civets, sloth bears, and many species of deer are also found here. Hidden deep in the swamps are rare crocodiles and freshwater dolphins. Sauraha thet town on the edge of the park is a lively tourist centre and is set on a wide river with a backdrop of dense jungle. The town is surrounded by rice fields and Tharu villages and visiting one of these villages as well as experiencing the Tharu cultural dance show is another highlight of the area. Popular activities whilst in the park are canoe rides, visiting the elephant breeding centre, an elephant safari, bird watching, jungle walks and jeep rides. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve
This wildlife reserve set in the Eastern Terai was founded to protect the endangered wild water buffalo. It is a small area of grassland and islands in the floodplain of the Sapt Kosi River. There are over 400 species of birds including the rare sarus crane as well as deer, boars, crocodiles.
